Welcome to COEL @ Camp Davern~ The Centre for Outdoor Education and Leadership
We are a growing outdoor and experimental education facility focusing on grade specific programs for students ages 11-15.
Open your classroom to the dynamic learning platform nature provides. COEL @ Davern offers teachers safe, creative and fun educational opportunities for their students. We have a wide range of program offerings to support common interests in the learning scopes of leadership, team building and environmental education.

In addition to our general program selections, we thrive in creative unique and group specific curriculum to meet and surpass the needs and interests specific to your school, group of company.
Land Activities at COEL @ Camp Davern
Archery
Nature Discovery
In Nature Discovery, students have an opportunity to learn about the world around them. Taking place in our diverse ecosystem, they will examine the landscapes of our site, investigating tree species, animal life in the area and the environment.
Orienteering
A time honored skill and one with resulted in the discovery of America, through use of compass and map, we teach participants how to navigate the world around them. Through use of landmarks, coordinate courses and paper map navigation, this program is a terrific stand alone selection or one used in partnership with Geo Cashing.
Geo Caching
This program teaches participants about orienteering through use of GPS. Modern meets traditional in this program. Students will travel throughout the property discovering the various caches hidden around. With a focus on coordinates and routing, Geo Caching is a relevant instructional program in modern times.
Outdoor Living Skills
This interactive program focuses on teaching students the basics of surviving in the wilderness. Shelter building, fire making and cooking are some of the possible components to this program. OLS can be offered for multiple periods for groups who have a keen interest in this program specialty.
Trails & Hikes
As part of a mindfulness focus, our instructor facilitated hikes take participants into the woods on supervised treks that vary by skill and distance. Throughout each hike, instructors program breaks for discussion, appreciation and reflection.
Vertical Playground
When you arrive to the Vertical Playground, you’ll see a variety of items suspended in the air and a handful of course outlined. The challenge is simple, to climb through/around or under one of the many routes on the course.
Climbing Wall
With two courses to choose from, differentiated by difficulty, our climbing wall offers participants a safe environment to work towards a personal best. Basic climbing theory is reviewed and participants are encouraged to challenge themselves using balance, strength and endurance to succeed.
Water Activities at COEL @ Camp Davern
Canoeing
Sometimes thrill seeking is over rated. This program brings kids back to the roots of transportation across the water. With our main focus on simply getting into the boat and experimenting, this program presents students with the basic skills and knowledge to effectively navigate their boat.
Kayaking
Be the skipper of your very own boat. Kayaking is one of the most popular water based programs offered. Here, students have the opportunity to learn paddle techniques and experience life on the water. They will engage in balancing techniques and challenges, and will be given the opportunity to explore essential skills such as how to complete a wet exit from their kayak.
Raft Building
Rafting is a dynamic program that requires strategic thought and planning prior as well as the ability to convert concept into reality. Working with your ship crew, teams create a raft, and then present it to the full group. Groups can choose to end the program with a recreational race between raft creations.
Activities in the Arts at COEL @ Camp Davern
Dramatic Arts
Through their participation in various different activities and challenges, students will have the opportunity to participate in dramatic games, improvisation and performance.
Mold, Level, Build (MLB)
A derivative of our arts program, at COEL we work with groups to creatively conceptualize, a team project, then, working together they take the project from concept to reality. Regardless of an individuals artistic skill, participants soon realize the most dynamic creations require a vast skill base and that everyone is able to contribute to the overall success.
Rhythm & Drumming
Through the use of listening, communication and teamwork, students are challenged to engage with each other in the creation of sound through use of Djembe drums and a wide range of percussion instruments.
Leadership activities at COEL @ Camp Davern
Engagement Initiatives
Through their participation in various different activities and challenges, students will have the opportunity to participate in dramatic games, improvisation and performance.
Team Building
Designed to develop positive group dynamics, this program is perfect for teams and classes who struggle to get along. Through the development of goal setting, cooperation, problem solving and constructive communication, effective team dynamic’s are born. This program can be offered for multiple periods for groups with a keen focus in this area.
Lego Leadership
An innovative way to engage students in cooperative team play. Broken into small working groups, students are challenged to accomplish group tasks against the clock.
The Leader Within
This program focuses on the ideas behind great leadership. Students will discuss what makes a good leader and examine various leadership styles. They will have the opportunity to evaluate styles, work with each other to determine what kind of leader they are and experience leadership first hand through activity work.
Flying Squirrel
One of our high rope initiatives, our Flying Squirrel requires teamwork. With use of the entire rotation group, this initiative demonstrates our power in numbers, outlining how successful we can be at accomplishing a goal when we all work together.
Human Jenga
You take a block from the bottom and you put it on top! This high initiative challenges participants to grow their tower, balancing on the top as it gets higher and higher. Break the height record or achieve a personal best, either way, you’ll love this challenge.
At COEL @ Camp Davern all overnight packages are based on a 24 hour period. Arrival to site after 11am and departure on your final day after lunch. Teachers are welcomed to site at a ratio of 1:15 at no additional cost. Additional staff/parent supervisors are welcome to join the program for $30 per day.
A brief introduction to the Outdoor Centre at Camp Davern. No meals are provided.
A full day of programming including 4 program periods, 1 evening program and 1 campfire. Meals Included: Dinner, Breakfast & Lunch as well as 1 evening snack.
Two full days of programming including 6 program periods, 2 elective options, 2 evening programs and 2 campfires. Meals Included: 2 Dinners, 2 Breakfast & 2 Lunches as well as 2 evening snacks.
Three full days of programming including 8 program periods, 4 elective options, 2 evening programs, 1 talent night and 2 campfires.
Meals Included: 3 Dinners, 3 Breakfast & 3 Lunches as well as 3 evening snacks.
A typical two day experience at COEL @ Camp Davern
Group arrival takes place between 10am and 12pm. Students are asked to bring a bag lunch for day #1.
Day #1
- Arrival, Welcome and Orientation takes place followed by student lunch. Programs begin after lunch (and optional swim test if applicable).
- 2 Programs followed by dinner, evening program and campfire.
Day #2
- A full programming, beginning at 8am and finishing at 9:30pm.
- 4 programs, evening program and campfire, 3 meals and one evening snack will be enjoyed.
Day #3
- Morning program followed by breakfast, pack up and 2 elective program options (to be picked by teachers the night prior).
- School group departs after lunch.
